We all want to smell better, longer. But how do we do it? The secret is in the application.

Applying fragrance to your body's pulse points will help the scent rise throughout the day. Your pulse points include your chest (your heart is your largest pulse point!), your arms, your neck, and if you want to really make it last, behind your knees.

The best time to apply perfume is after the shower once your skin is moisturized. To get the most out of your favorite Skylar scent, we recommend using an unscented or complementary lotion for moisturizing. The warmth of the shower will open your pores and allow the scent to really anchor onto your moisturized skin.

After spritzing, don't forget to tap and not rub. By rubbing you will dissolve the top notes faster, making your scent disappear sooner than desired. For an all-day scent, bring a Skylar rollie with you. Tuck one in your purse, the car, anywhere!

Discover your signature scent today.

Where to Apply Your Perfume for Longer Wear

Where to Apply Your Perfume for Longer Wear

Have you ever shared an office, elevator, or workspace with someone who uses way, way too much perfume? If we’re not the only ones, you know then that wearing one too many spritzes is a quick way to change the mood in the room, and maybe even bring on a headache. After all, we want to leave a lasting impression on people around us with our scent, not one that reminds them of spring allergies.

On the other hand, if you’re wearing so little perfume that it can’t be detected, then we’re missing out on all the fun. Fragrances are for smelling - not fearing. So how do you make sure you’re wearing just the right amount of fragrance? How do you get that subtle touch of fresh, clean scent without driving your coworkers mad?

Don’t worry - it’s not as tricky as you think. Here’s a simple guide to getting to the sweet spot of perfume application.

  1. Start with a hypo-allergenic or naturally- derived perfume

Most conventional perfume is toxic. It’s unfortunate but true.

Thanks to a legal loophole known as the Fair Package and Labeling Act of 1966, fragrance manufacturers can include dangerous, unlisted ingredients - including known carcinogens like phthalates and parabens. With chemicals like that, is it really a surprise that 30% of people have an irritation response to these fragrances? That can include anything from sniffling and coughing to skin rashes, migraines, or dizziness. There are too many harmful ingredients that cause adverse reactions to the general population. Not only is it unsafe for you to wear, but it could be unsafe for those around you as well.

That’s why it’s crucial to start with a hypoallergenic perfume like Skylar. We use safe, naturally-derived ingredients that won’t irritate your body - or those around you. In fact, Skylar was created when our founder realized her perfumes were irritating her infant daughter and decided to build a fragrance company that inspired trust in every bottle.

  1. Spray a bit on your pulse points - don’t rub!

Perfume works best when it is sprayed on your pulse points - areas where you can easily feel your heart beating on the surface of your skin. That means your heart, neck, wrists, and even the backs of your knees!.

But here’s the secret to this step: Don’t rub it in. After spraying perfume on their wrists, most women rub their wrists together. This “bruises” the scent by rapidly heating and smearing the fragrance off the skin.  We had to ask ourselves would we crush a gardenia before smelling it?

  1. Take the arm’s-length test

How strong is the fragrance? What kind of fragrance is it? Are you wearing it to an airy restaurant or within a small office? How sensitive is your nose? All of these questions and more have to be factored into the equation, so the idea that there’s a right amount of perfume to wear is sheer silliness.

So here’s a better idea: start by applying just a little bit of perfume, then have a friend stand at arm’s length. Can they smell you? If so, you’re wearing enough. If not, try adding more, bit by bit, until they can. But of course, you don’t have to! The arm’s-length test can help you determine the absolute maximum strength your perfume should have. If you’re going to be interacting very closely and intimately with other people, you might want to keep your fragrance even closer to your skin - i.e. just a few inches.

  1. Check in with your friends

We acclimate very quickly to scents that we live with. So if you’re using a fragrance every day, you won’t notice it as easily as you first did. That’s why long-term fragrance wearers - especially people who stick with the same perfume for years - can end up wearing more. And more. And more.

Of course, no one’s eager to have that “you smell too strong” conversation with you - so you have to make it easy for them. Check in with your family, friends, coworkers, partner, etc. every once in a while, and ask them if you’re signature scent is becoming a figurative (or literal) headache. Blushing and stammering could mean you might have to take it down a notch. But of course, if you’re wearing an alluring, clean perfume from Skylar, that blushing might mean something else, too.

Imagine this scene: A girl boss is dressed to-the-tee for the meeting of a lifetime. She wants to make an impression so she surely won’t forget to spritz with her go-to power-fragrance. She wants the scent to last all day, so she gives a couple of extra spritzes for good measure. She rapidly rubs her wrists together, grabs her bag, and heads out the door.

For many of us, this scene is far too familiar. What you may not know is that the spritzing technique we’ve been using for years is all wrong! Applying perfume, much like choosing a fragrance that suits you, is a subtle art. It takes some practice to really make your scent glow. Here are 4 things perfume-applying faux-pas we should correct to make our scents last into the night.

  1. Bad timing

So many of us think of adding perfume as the last and final touch to our getting-ready routine, almost like the “cherry-on-top”. Like our Girlboss in the story above, most of us apply our perfumes when our skin is completely dry.

An ideal application method is to apply it just after you get out of the shower. When your skin is moist, which will help it lock in your fragrance. For extra longevity, apply an unscented moisturizing lotion before dabbing on your perfume. Moisturized skin helps to keep the scent anchored, making your favorite scent last longer.

  1. Forgetting your pulse points

Is our Girlboss the only one out there that applies perfume just on her wrists? We’ve done it too! Besides our wrists, there are other important places on our bodies that we should also be applying our fragrance.

A better approach is to dab or spray perfume onto the various ‘pulse points’ around your body. Think of these as the places where your blood flows close to the surface of the skin. The heat from these pulse points helps the perfume radiate evenly throughout your day. Next time you apply your fragrance, focus on applying to your wrists, neck, and over your heart. For an extra special occasion, give the back of your knees a spritz too!

  1. Rubbing it in

Contrary to just about everything we knew about applying our perfume, it turns out that rubbing is not the correct way. If you’re like us, we thought that if you rub it in, you’re really locking it into your skin! Well, we can just call ourselves older and wiser for learning that rubbing your perfume into your skin is a habit we’ll all have to ditch.

The friction caused by rubbing the wrists creates heat, which burns the fragrance off faster – especially the top notes. This makes your perfume evaporate much faster than it normally would. Some experts even think that rubbing your skin brings out enzymes which more quickly degrade the perfume.

Next time you apply your fragrance, resist the urge to rub! Instead, after you’ve dabbed, sprayed, or rolled your fragrance, just allow it to dry naturally!

  1. Using too much

When you want your scent to last all day, you might be tempted to spray a couple of extra times. While we may think that this packs on the fragrance to make it last longer, all it really will do, is make your smell too strong for a few hours. There is no guarantee that it will stay as strong for the entirety of your day (and quite possibly, you’ll still lose it by the end of the day).

The better method is reapplication! Give yourself little booster sprays (or rolls) throughout the day. When your first application has somewhat faded, perhaps after lunch or on your way to happy hour, spray on a bit more. A great on-the-go option is to have our travel rollies in your favorite scent on hand for these touch-up moments. Perfect for your purse, or in your desk drawer!

With these simple tricks, you'll be a perfume-applying pro in no time!

We get this question all the time; what is the difference between the Skylar full size (1.7 oz) and rollerball?

Well – in a word, NOTHING.  And –EVERYTHING.

The formula inside is exactly the same, but it’s all about the application. Your 1.7 is the perfect way to clean up your beauty counter – it lives at home. Give yourself an all-over spray after the shower and before you get dressed. The pump on the full-size bottle allows for a wider range of scent to hit the skin during application.

The Skylar Rollie is perfect for re-application throughout the day. Keep a rollie in your purse, the car, wherever! We recommend applying to pulse points –roll on wrists, neck, and cleavage. Your heart is your biggest pulse point, as the heat from your body rises, it lifts the scent upwards.

Apply fragrance where you want to be kissed, so if it’s a big night, have fun – the small of your back, behind your knees, even your ankles are great pulse points!
